Electric Vehicle (EV) The most efficient form of motorised car, an EV is cheaper to top-up with electricity than an equivalent combustion-engine vehicle is with petrol/diesel. With an EV, an electric motor is powered by a high-capacity battery and delivers what is known as ‘electric range’ or just ‘range’. What’s more, EVs produce zero harmful emissions. An EV can be charged at home, at work or at one of several thousand UK-wide public charge points.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) PHEVs offer the best of both worlds since they’re powered by a combustion engine and an electric motor. This means plenty of miles per gallon plus a certain amount of all-electric range. PHEVs produce fewer CO2 emissions than hybrids or conventional cars and they can be charged in all the same places as EVs.

Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) If you’re looking for a gentle introduction to the world of electrified vehicles, an HEV is a good way to start. While similar to a PHEV, an HEV typically doesn’t offer any range – however, it does provide self-charging convenience. It also enables rapid acceleration while delivering a good balance of efficiency and performance.
