Can I hire a car with a debit card?

Hiring a car isn’t something that can always be planned ahead of time. For instance, if your regular car breaks down or gets written off in an accident. It’s also a useful option to be able to hire a car as a form of personal transport for a trip. Whatever the case, you don’t want to be limited by the payment methods available to you. In this post, we answer one of the most frequently posed questions when it comes to renting a vehicle – can you hire a car using just a debit card?

Paying for a rental car with a debit card

Generally, a credit card is seen as the most commonly used payment method for rental cars. A reason for this could be because there can potentially some red tape around using debit cards. This can include:

A credit check.
Providing additional forms of identification.
Having a hold placed on cash held in the account (release of held money can take up to three weeks).
Proof of insurance.
Exclusions of certain types of vehicle.

Every rental company and dealership will have their own policies when it comes to payment methods. As such, it could be the case that there are no additional checks when using a debit card over a credit card. Many will allow you to pay with debit cards though.

The only requirement we have is that the name on the card is the same as the name of the main driver for the car (your license will therefore be adequate ID). This applies regardless of what type of card you use.

While we also accept credit and debit cards for deposits, we do not accept the following payment methods:

Cash.
Cheques.
Pre-paid ‘top up’ cards.
