What should you ask when renting a car?

Questions you should consider asking when you’re renting a car include:


  • What is the fuel policy?
  • What insurance is included with my rental?

What do you need to rent a car?

In order to rent a car from us, you’ll need:


  • Your driver’s licence
  • 2x valid ID such as a passport and bank statement
  • A credit or debit card in the main driver’s name
  • Any additional documentation we have asked for in relation to the rental

What do I need to do before returning a rental car?

​If you need to refill the fuel tank before returning your vehicle, please do so. You’ll also need to remove all your personal belongings and check the car over for damage.

What do I need to take to collect a rental car?

In order to collect your rental car, you’ll need:


  • Your driver’s licence

Do I need insurance to rent a car?

​No – liability insurance is provided with your rental vehicle, the cost for which is included in the hire charge. A damage waiver comes with an excess that is payable should damage occur. You also have the option to purchase other protections, which can lower the cost of the excess.

How do you rent a car if you have no insurance?

Basic liability insurance is included as part of the hire package, so you don’t necessarily need to take out extra insurance. We also offer other products that will reduce your excess should damage occur.

How does rental car insurance work?

​The insurance on a rental car works in a similar way to your regular insurance policy. As long as you adhere to the terms of your agreement, damage to the parts of the vehicle covered by the insurance requires only the payment of an excess, and we’ll arrange the repairs. If you damage a part that isn’t covered, you could be liable for the cost.

Do I need extra insurance when renting a car?

​Many customers are happy with the level of insurance provided with the rental vehicle, but if you wish, you can purchase additional products that will reduce your excess should damage occur.

What do I do if I damage a rental car?

If you damage the car, simply give us a call to discuss the nature of the damage and we’ll arrange for repairs or a replacement vehicle, depending on the situation. You will have to cover the excess for the repairs.

What happens if you hit something in a rental car?

Again, you’ll need to give us a call to discuss the matter. Contact our accident helpline on 01388 814671 and provide us with:


  • Date/Time of Accident
  • Third party name/registration/telephone number/insurance details
  • Number of passengers
  • Location

We’ll then advise on the next steps. 

Who is responsible for rental car damage?

​The main driver is responsible for any damage that occurs to the vehicle. The excess and/or repair costs will need to be paid by the driver.

Can I drive a rental car abroad?

​Please get in touch with our team today to discuss the terms of your rental agreement and whether you are able to take your vehicle abroad.

Do you have to return a hire car with a full tank?

​At Croxdale, we ask you to return the vehicle with the same level of fuel that you drove away with. So if the tank was full, we require it to be refilled before you return the car. Other rental companies have different policies, so check before you drive away.

What happens if you speed in a rental?

​If you are caught speeding in a rental vehicle, the fine will be sent to us. The value of the fine will then be deducted from your bank card, which is kept on file during the rental. You may also have to pay an admin fee for the handling of the fine.

What do you do if you lose the rental keys?

The first thing you’ll need to do is give us a call to let us know what has happened. Provide your name, location, and your rental booking number, and our team will advise on the next steps. You may have to pay a fee for a replacement key.

What happens if your rental car is stolen?

With Croxdale, your vehicle is covered by Theft Protection, but this does not include the loss of any of your personal items. If your car is stolen, give our team a call and we’ll advise you on the next steps.

What fuel do you put in a rental?

What is flexible car hire?
